Shadow Dungeon Runes and Enhancement Stones
Launch rift currencies versus the future Rune System on the free roadmap.
Shadow Dungeon’s 1.0 announcement splits rift-exclusive items into a numbered list you only chase after the main story. That list is the subject of this page. It is not a crafting spreadsheet, and it is not the Rune System named later on the free future-content roadmap. Mixing those two ideas is the fastest way to misread the store.
Greater Rifts unlock after the campaign, with Normal, Master, Nightmare, and Inferno. Higher difficulties raise rare-item chance and let weapons roll more affixes. The exclusive currencies below are documented in the same post as those rifts. For how difficulties work, read Greater Rifts. For the store’s separately named Mystic Dungeon Challenges, keep that page distinct.
Official rift-exclusive list
OO Cat published these items as rift-exclusive in Complete Official Version Content:
- 370 Talent Skill Runes
- 6,800 Equipment Skill Runes
- 60 Attribute Runes
- Socketing Stones
- Various Super Enhancement Stones
- Essence Stones
- Permanent Magic Stones
- Golden Hammer
- Divine Mirror
Counts are official. Effect-by-effect recipes are not. This wiki will not invent which NPC consumes a Golden Hammer or what a Divine Mirror rerolls. Use the names as drop goals while you learn the live UI after 1.0.
Talent Skill Runes (370)
370 matches the launch skill pool of 370+ skills across twelve talent trees. The natural reading is that Talent Skill Runes interact with that skill list, not with a hidden thirteenth tree. Unlimited late-game skill points still come from character progression; runes are a rift-gated extra, not a replacement for leveling. After a respec, remember patch 1.0.1 fixed pinnacle talents that failed to clear — a talent-state bug, not a rune bug.
Equipment Skill Runes (6,800)
6,800 Equipment Skill Runes sit beside the 1.0 weapon update: 1,000+ affixes in five categories (Basic, Special, Negative Effects, Skills, Summoning Skills) and 2,400 weapon-granted skills (auras, trap launchers, skill conversions, projectile-blocking shields, combo launchers, summoned-creature accessories and attacks). The rune count is far larger than the talent-rune count, which fits equipment being the wider random pool. More than half of items from 3,200 templates (100 million-plus outcomes) are legendary or mythic, and more than half of equipment can carry extra skills. Equipment Skill Runes are the rift-only line that targets that layer.
Attribute Runes (60)
60 Attribute Runes are listed separately from talent and equipment runes. Paragon, after level 100, is also described as further enhancing attributes. Do not collapse Attribute Runes into Paragon nodes; they are different sentences in the same announcement. See Paragon for the cap-and-tree layer, and treat Attribute Runes as rift drops until OO Cat publishes a combined diagram.
Stones, hammer, and mirror
Socketing Stones, Super Enhancement Stones, Essence Stones, and Permanent Magic Stones share the enhancement vocabulary already on the store: Reforging, Enchanting & Enhancement. Socketing Stones imply sockets; Super Enhancement Stones imply a stronger enhance step; Essence and Permanent Magic Stones are named as distinct stacks. Golden Hammer and Divine Mirror are unique named tools on the same exclusive list. This page will not assign unofficial drop rates or “best” hammer uses.
Inventory still grows by quest-unlocked extra pages, with an unlimited-page warehouse. Rift loot is meant to be stored, not discarded because the backpack filled. Treasure Sprites can salvage unwanted gear to gold; that is not the same as consuming a Super Enhancement Stone. See Treasure Sprites and the rest of Items.
What these runes are not
They are not paid battle-pass tokens. Shadow Dungeon has no microtransactions. They are not seasonal power that expires; there are no seasonal resets. They are not co-op raid currencies. They are not the demo’s 0.4.0 chapter pack. The free demo (4563350) is a separate app.
They also are not map-level drops from the 160 story maps by default. The announcement puts this block under rift-exclusive items. Campaign maps still drop the huge random item pool, with monster level and drops tied to the map, not the player. Rift exclusives are the extra table after the story.
Future Rune System (announced, not in 1.0)
The Steam store Planned Future Content list includes a Rune System alongside Assassin, Engineer, Barbarian, Warlock, Mercenary, Tower Defense, and Transmutation & Crafting. All of that is announced as free for owners. That future Rune System is additional upcoming content. It is not a restatement of the 370 / 6,800 / 60 launch rift runes.
Until that update ships, optimize around launch systems: twelve trees, unlimited late-game skill points, 15 sets per class (most with affixes that alter skill forms), 17 blessing shrines, gems, buff potions, rare permanent elixirs, reforging and enchanting, and Greater Rift exclusives. Track ship dates on the Updates Hub and in 1.0 Launch Content.
Practical order of operations
- Finish the seven-chapter campaign (dungeons, ancient temples, scorching deserts, haunted ruins, realms beyond reality, depths of hell, Demon Lord) so Greater Rifts unlock.
- Confirm you are near level 99–100 as intended, then continue into Paragon while you run rifts.
- Raise Greater Rift difficulty when you want the documented extra rare chance and extra weapon affixes.
- Bank Talent Skill Runes, Equipment Skill Runes, Attribute Runes, and the named stones and tools.
- Leave room in your plan for a later Rune System patch that is not this list.
Combat while you farm rifts still uses mouse movement or controller auto-target and auto-attack; see Combat. Class choice stays Sorcerer, Holy Warrior, Archer, or Necromancer until the four future classes arrive.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions about Shadow Dungeon.
Where do Talent Skill Runes, Equipment Skill Runes, and Attribute Runes drop?
They are listed as rift-exclusive in the 1.0 Complete Official Version Content announcement, alongside Socketing Stones, Super Enhancement Stones, Essence Stones, Permanent Magic Stones, Golden Hammer, and Divine Mirror.
Is the future Rune System the same as these rift runes?
No. The store’s planned Rune System is extra free content. Launch rift runes are a 1.0 Greater Rift exclusive list with published counts (370 / 6,800 / 60).
Do I need Inferno to see any runes?
The announcement does not say exclusives appear only on Inferno. Higher difficulties improve rare-item chance and weapon affix rolls. Exact per-tier rune rates are not published.
Are these runes microtransactions?
No. Shadow Dungeon has no MTX. Rift items are earned in play after the story.
How do Socketing Stones relate to gems?
The store lists gems and an enhancement system separately from the rift Socketing Stones line. OO Cat did not publish a socket recipe in the 1.0 post, so this wiki does not invent one.
Should I salvage runes with Treasure Sprites?
Sprites salvage unwanted equipment into gold. The 1.0 post does not say sprites should eat rift-exclusive runes. Store those currencies in the unlimited warehouse until you know the live sink.
